Full-Time Director of Training
Job Description
The Director of Training will be responsible for creating an overarching coffee education program for Variety’s retail staff and wholesale accounts. They will create a comprehensive training program that covers speed, quality, and coffee knowledge. This role requires a deep understanding of coffee and drink preparation in addition to outstanding organization and time management.
The Director of Trainer will work closely and hands on with Variety baristas as well as wholesale clients to educate them on all duties including but not limited to: espresso and milk preparation, latte art, coffee brewing, cupping, and bar cleanliness. We are looking for someone who can balance creating a coffee training program and carrying out in-lab training sessions; while also making time to visit Variety cafes and wholesale accounts for quality control and training purposes.
Responsibilities include:
Training Material Creation
- Written and visual guides
- Brewing parameters for wholesale
- Drink standards
- Maintaining an up-to-date coffee program
Training
- Conduct lab training sessions for: exceptional drink making abilities while also being able to clearly convey this knowledge to others
- Conduct training session in Variety cafes
- Trainings at wholesale accounts
- Quality control at wholesale accounts
- Work with baristas to improve quality while also maintaining Variety’s standards of consistency, speed, efficiency, and cleanliness.
- Communicate professionally with baristas, as well as wholesale accounts
- Work with store managers to schedule trainings with all new hires and current baristas as needed
- Work with Coffee Department to ensure all members of the company as well as wholesale accounts have access to information about our coffees
- Regularly check in at cafes to ensure all coffee standards are being adhered to
- Assist with quality control/recipe assessment and development as needed
- Keep the training lab clean and stocked with items necessary for training (milk, aged out coffee, cups, towels, etc.)
- Lead cuppings for staff and wholesale accounts
- Work events as needed
- Various other duties as directed
Qualifications
- 3+ years of speciality coffee experience required
- 2+ years management experience preferred
- NYC Food Handler’s license required
- Organization and curriculum creating skills
- Experience with G-Suite
- Coffee equipment understanding, including programming and basic troubleshooting
- Ability to work both independently and with a team
