Job Description
For the position of Retail Manager at its Importers Showroom in Brooklyn, NY, Crop to Cup Coffee Importers seeks a new team member, who is passionate about coffee and eager to develop new skills in retail management and green coffee sourcing.
Crop to Cup started in 2007 in Chicago and New York as a roasted coffee brand as well as a green coffee source for roasters. In 2014 Crop to Cup moved to focuses purely on green coffee and support for commercial roasters and home roasters. Its retail operation in Brooklyn, NY includes a green coffee store and coffee bar. The store features coffee from specialty roasters across the US, green beans, various brewing and roasting tools, and educational events.
Retail Manager duties include:
– Retail Store Management including :staffing calendar, staff management , quality and cleanliness, product selection and inventory. Includes both coffee bar (drinks/food) plus the green coffee store (green beans & roasting tools)
– Barista shifts on bar and green coffee counter shifts
– Responsibility to carry out and/or manage staff/interns to carry out other operational activities, including:
o Events calendar (home roasting courses, coffee-related lectures and more)
o Cupping Management (setting up, cleaning up, record keeping of cupping to support green coffee importing staff)
o Processing of online and wholesale green coffee orders (beans, roasting tools, etc)
o Strict maintenance and cleaning calendar
Flexible 40-45 hours per week
The ideal candidate should demonstrate a strong background in coffee retail, expert customer service, and a passion for coffee quality and exploration throughout the coffee industry. The candidate must demonstrate the ability to work independently and effectively manage colleagues. Although strong barista skills are required (expert milk texturing, espresso science and more), prior history in green coffee is not required.
The new Retail Manager will undergo a 3 month training program, starting as barista and managing basic café operations. After completing training in green coffee operations and cupping, the Retail Manager will graduate to manage all retail activities including both café and green store. All training paid. Hourly rate or salary will increase along with completed training and as new responsibilities are assumed.
After 1 year of service, perks of manager positions at Crop to Cup include an origin trip at least every other year and attendance at industry events (SCAA, MANE, etc) along with other Crop to Cup staff.
