Full-Time Cafe Manager
Job Description
South Bronx United, a youth development and community nonprofit organization that reaches more than 1,500 young people annually, is hiring an experience cafe manager to oversee The Clubhouse Café, a new social enterprise coffee shop launching in the Concourse-Yankee Stadium neighborhood. It will serve as the foundation for a new program to provide young people with job skills and career training. The café is a partnership with Devoción Coffee.
Candidates should be warm, welcoming, passionate about coffee, believe in SBU’s mission, and excited to provide a great customer experience. Their responsibilities include processing payments using the café’s Point of Sale System, managing cash, ensuring that the café is clean and well-presented at all times, welcoming all customers with a warm front-house presence, manage the maintenance and repair of equipment, and training and supervising young staff, some of whom participate in a 6-month workforce development fellowship cohort.
RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Maintain a clean and well-presented cafe space.
• Implement opening and closing procedures (and train staff on those procedures).
• Maintain cleanliness and organization of the interior and exterior space.
2. Manage expenses and supplies
• Ensure that all café expenses are within budget and identifying ways to decrease operational costs.
• Receive café supplies and verify that the correct items and quantities have been delivered.
• Take inventory of café supplies and ordering new stock as needed.
3. Deliver excellent customer service
• Resolve customer complaints regarding food quality and customer service.
• Suggest new menu items based on customers’ preferences and feedback.
4. Staff supervision and training
• Attend Devoción training courses and support employees through the training process.
• Prepare weekly work schedules for staff and finding suitable replacements in cases of staff absence.
• Ensure staff are uploading café and organization values and demonstrating excellent customer service.
5. Work with organization leadership on Café growth and strategy
• Identifying strategies to retain and attract customers.
• Work with organization leadership and the Café Advisory Council on initiatives and strategies.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
• Exemplary management and leadership skill.
• Excellent customer service.
• Bachelor’s degree or certification in business administration or business management is advantageous. (Minimum High school diploma or GED)
• Proven management experience in the hospitality industry.
• A food handler’s license and sound knowledge of food health and safety regulations.
• Strong business acumen.
• Effective communication skills, especially with youth and young adults.
• Effective in multi-cultural and cross-cultural settings and understanding of individuals of all backgrounds.
• Familiarity with the South Bronx community or other neighboring communities is preferred.
• Conversational Spanish proficiency is a plus
TIME
Full-time, expected early morning to afternoon hours. Potential hours shift on Yankee Stadium event days.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
Compensation will start with an hourly wage at $20/hr plus tips
