Job Description
Overview
The Director of Education is a multi-faceted role, responsible for developing and managing education programs, overseeing Devoción educators, leadership training, and directing and overseeing coffee quality standards for retail teams and wholesale partners. The Director is responsible for ensuring that all locations and partners are trained to exemplify the standards of the company, developing up-to-date training materials and company wide coffee brewing standards. This position reports to the CEO.
Primary Responsibilities
- Foster a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for all identities and learning styles
- Lead as an ambassador of Devoción coffee quality and show a very strong understanding of company background, ethics, and core values
- Refine and implement barista education programs that communicate Devoción’s values, hospitality pillars, and high quality standards
- Conduct training sessions for Devoción leadership teams
- Conduct weekly quality control visits to Devoción retail locations
- Conduct occasional informational sessions to our partners, and monitor and maintain coffee quality
- Provide guidance to the current education team
- Work closely with the Director of Operations to manage the professional development of Devoción baristas
- Facilitate hiring for the Education and Retail departments
- Review barista performance/coffee quality weekly, quarterly, and as needed
- Create and maintain an up to date database of educational resources, recipes, and brew guides
- Oversee the development of seasonal beverages for Devoción locations and wholesale partners
- Attend weekly cuppings with the roasters to ensure quality standards across the company
- Work closely with the Marketing Team to assist with rotating coffee selections at Devoción retail locations
- Maintain Education schedule and client bookings
- Additional projects as assigned by the CEO
What We’re Looking For
- A seasoned coffee professional with at least 5+ years of barista experience in a specialty coffee setting with proven coffee knowledge
- At least 5+ years of experience in a leadership or teaching role in the coffee industry
- Must have high communication skills
- A skilled multitasker and administrator with the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously
- Must be comfortable with public speaking and have high writing and editing skills (technical writing is a plus!)
- Proficient with cupping and the SCA standards, recipe development and proven sensory skills
- Be willing to travel within NYC, out of state, and internationally
- Flexibility to work weekends and events, as needed
- Spanish fluency preferred
