Part-Time Coffee Roaster & Packager

Above Ground Coffee – Posted by AboveGroundCoffee Brooklyn, NY

Job Description

About Us
Above Ground Coffee is a monthly whole bean coffee subscription, built for people who love the ritual of freshly roasted coffee. Each month, we feature beans sourced from a different region of the world (Kenya, Tanzania, Guatemala, Colombia, Rwanda, and beyond), and roast a single curated batch for our subscribers. We roast and ship in the first week of every month, delivering freshness, discovery, and consistency in every bag.

The Role
We’re looking for a Coffee Roaster & Packager to manage our monthly production cycle. You’ll be responsible for roasting, packaging, and preparing shipments using our new Bellwether roaster. This is a hands-on role for someone who loves working with coffee, has roasting experience, and enjoys the craft of turning green beans into a beautiful, finished product that makes people’s mornings.

Responsibilities
Monthly Roasting
Operate and monitor our Bellwether roaster to roast one high-quality batch per month.
Adjust roast profiles based on bean origin to highlight unique flavors.
Quality Control
Cup roasted beans to ensure flavor consistency and balance.
Provide input on roast notes for subscriber communications.
Packaging & Fulfillment
Package beans (whole bean only), apply labels, and prep subscriber shipments.

Operations
Maintain the roaster and workspace to ensure safety, cleanliness, and efficiency.
Track green bean inventory and communicate when reorders are needed.
Logistics Support
Coordinate timing so subscribers always receive their coffee in the first week of the month.

Qualifications
Prior coffee roasting experience required (Bellwether experience a plus).

Strong understanding of roast profiling and coffee flavor development.

Detail-oriented with an eye for packaging and presentation.

Reliable and organized—able to manage a monthly production cycle independently.
Based in or able to commute to Manhattan or Brooklyn.

Bonus: Experience in brick-and-mortar café operations, retail coffee, or scaling roasting programs. (We’re planning for a physical location down the line, and this experience would be a huge plus.)

Schedule & Compensation
Schedule: Part-time / contract; work is concentrated during the first week of each month.

Compensation: Hourly or per roast cycle, commensurate with experience.
Perks: Work with a fast-growing subscription brand, influence roast style, and grow with us as our subscriber base expands.

How to Apply

Send your resume and a short note about your coffee roasting background to kelly@severinhacker.com. Bonus if you can share a favorite roast profile you’ve developed.
