ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF RETAIL
Variety Coffee Roasters is a New York specialty coffee roaster founded in 2008. Variety currently has 7 cafes in Brooklyn and Manhattan, as well as a roastery and training lab in East Williamsburg. The Assistant Director of Retail Operations will support the Director of Retail in overseeing consistent standards of operational integrity, customer service and coffee quality across all of Variety’s retail locations. This is an extremely hands-on, dynamic position that requires a high level of flexibility and collaboration. The Assistant Director of Retail Operations will spend the majority of their working hours on the ground in Variety’s six (and growing) retail locations, and will work very closely with the Director of Retail to determine priorities and action plans. They will collaborate with our team of Cafe Managers in creating an excellent customer experience, serving really good coffee, and maintaining Variety’s culture and values.

This is a full-time, salaried position that does not accept tips. The Assistant Director of Retail Operations will report directly to the Director of Retail Operations.
THE ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF RETAIL OPERATIONS WILL:
-Function as critical support to the Director of Retail Ops and integral member of Retail leadership team along with counterpart in the Asst. Director role
-Evaluate workflows for efficiency as well as growth opportunities to increase same-store sales
-Develop systems to improve speed of service at retail locations per Variety priorities
Standardize appropriate store presentation and cleanliness for both front and back of house
-Ensure that cafes are constantly in compliance with NYC DOH regulations
-Identify ways to reduce store costs
-Ensure that Variety’s expectations of customer service are consistently executed across all cafes
-Cultivate a healthy and fun work environment aligned with Variety’s values
-Play a key role in opening new stores and establish strong operational foundations
-Collaborate with Training and Coffee Departments to assure excellent quality of coffee in cafes
-Work a staggered schedule with the other Assistant Director in order to ensure coverage
TASKS INCLUDE:
General:
-Attend and engage in regular meetings with administrative staff including Retail Director, Managing Director, Department heads and other staff
-Use performance management tool 15Five to communicate with manager and team
-Cover floor shifts at all of Variety’s retail locations as needed
Sales:
-Monitor and report on Cost Of Goods and pastry, milk and coffee waste
-Correct or revise workflows at cafes per efficiency standards
Customer Service & Leadership:
-Understand and exemplify Variety’s Customer Service ethos
-Embody both Warmth and Speed of Service
-Give real-time feedback for baristas on performance
-Model professionalism
Support New Store Openings:
-Coordinate ordering, delivery and storage of smallwares
-Install utilities (Internet, Phone service, electric, etc.)
-Set-up and organize stock room, retail areas and other areas of operation
-Work on the floor with opening team with a focus on establishing consistent quality
Facilities:
-Execute minor repairs, maintenance and general upkeep
-Coordinate with the Director of Retail and Service Technician for other maintenance issues.
-Oversee the execution of facilities-related duties by Cafe Management staff
Coffee Quality:
-Master Variety’s expectations of consistently high quality coffee and excellent presentation
-Identify staff training needs and coordinate managers/trainer to schedule training
-Constantly taste coffee at cafes to identify potential problems
-Work with Retail Trainer to train all new baristas in accordance with Variety’s company program
-Give real-time feedback for baristas on performance to assure consistency
REQUIREMENTS:
3+ years speciality coffee experience
1+ years management experience
Experience with G-suit
General computer skills
Ability to work well with a diverse team
Ability to lift 50lbs and commute regularly by foot
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
Annual salary of $75,600
80 hours paid time off per year
