Koneko, a Japanese-inspired cat café on the LES, is seeking an experienced, down-to-earth barista. This position is part-time.

We serve Stumptown coffee and a variety of teas from In Pursuit of Tea. Our cafe uses a La Marzocco Linea 2ee manual espresso machine.

Please have a minimum of one year’s experience in the food/coffee industry. Experience with third-wave coffee and a manual espresso machine is a plus. This position calls for some food prep — we make a variety of our drinks/components in-house — i.e. chai, hot chocolate, strawberry matcha latte, etc. We also serve a small food menu a la carte — part of the barista’s role is to help prepare these items. Having substantial experience with the food component is NOT a prerequisite.

The ideal candidate will have solid customer service skills, a love for animals (specifically cats!), and a strong work ethic. We strive for a drama-free, closely-knit work environment. Koneko has been a single-location small cafe since opening in 2015 — many of our customers are regulars from the neighborhood, and much of our staff has worked here for 2-3 years+.

Adjacent to the cafe is Koneko’s cattery, where we foster 15-20 adoptable cats at a time. All of these cats are rescued from kill shelters in NYC by our rescue partner Anjellicle Cats Rescue. The cats regularly are adopted, and we provide a safe and loving space for people to interact with them until they find an adopter. The two spaces are staffed independently, so baristas will not be responsible for the care of the cats, and vice versa. You are of course welcome to hang out with or say hi to the cats whenever though! 😺
