The Block Coffee is opening soon in Gowanus.
We’re building a neighborhood café focused on one thing: serving exceptional coffee with consistency, precision, and genuine hospitality. No oversized menu. Just thoughtful coffee, beautiful service, and a welcoming space people want to return to every day.
We’re looking for an experienced specialty coffee barista who wants more than just another café job. This is an opportunity to help shape the culture, workflow, and standards of a new coffee shop from the very beginning.
Responsibilities
- Dial in espresso and maintain consistency throughout service
- Prepare espresso and filter coffee to a high standard
- Deliver warm, attentive hospitality to every guest
- Help establish bar workflow, cleanliness, and service standards
- Support inventory management, restocking, and supply organization
- Assist with training future team members as we grow
- Maintain equipment and communicate when calibration or maintenance is needed
- Open and close the café independently
- Maintain a strong understanding of POS systems and cash-handling procedures
- Work closely with the owner to create an exceptional customer experience
Qualifications
- 2+ years of specialty coffee
- Understand espresso extraction, dialing in, milk texturing, and workflow
- Prior leadership or key-holder experience preferred
- Strong knowledge of espresso preparation and café operations
- Take pride in consistency and attention to detail
- Stay calm and organized during busy service
- Enjoy teaching and supporting teammates
- Flexible availability, including weekends and holidays
- Wants to help build a café, not simply work shifts
Bonus Points
- Experience with pour-over or batch brewing
- Latte art proficiency
- Coffee competition or training experience
- Equipment maintenance knowledge
- Experience opening or helping launch a café
