Full-Time Buyer/Merchandiser
Job Description
The buyer/merchandiser is responsible for the aesthetic of retail in the stores. This not only includes how products are displayed and signed in stores, but also the look, style and functionality of products that are brought into the company.
A primary responsibility for the merchandiser will be to travel from store to store and work with managers and staff to ensure that everyone has the tools to properly keep up the look of the store.
A merchandiser will also need to be up-to-date on trends in the coffee industry. We stand behind the quality of our merchandise as much as our coffee. New brewing and coffee-related equipment should be brought in on a consistent basis for testing by the directors of coffee and operations. Once products are brought in, the merchandiser is responsible for inventory management at the company warehouse and working with operations, the director of retail management, and store managers to maintain stock levels at each location.
Ordering of new merchandise and stock levels of all products in the company will be dictated by sales projections for upcoming months and budgets derived from previous sales. The ability to project inventory needs from sales reports and to create reports demonstrating profitability of products on hand in Microsoft Office/Excel is essential for the position. For slower moving products (based on performance), the merchandiser will need to come up with ways to move through inventory faster, either through promotions or sales.
Further responsibilities include, but aren’t limited to:
• Shopping and sourcing new product/forecasting trends/purchasing some seasonal products.
• Maintaining awareness of competitors’ performance, shopping competition.
• Planning budgets and presenting sales forecasts and figures for new items.
• Liaising with stores, vendors and distributors.
• Maintaining a comprehensive library of appropriate data, vendor files, and reference material.
• Visiting factory regularly and managing the distribution of stock, ordering stock, writing PO’s and transfers with delivery dates, and completing all necessary paperwork in a timely manner.
• Identifying difficulties with product and dealing with any problems or delays as they arise.
• Teaching basic visual merchandising to staff/managers.
• Creating and overseeing window displays.
• Ensuring that signage in stores is clean, fresh, and up to date.
• Gathering information on customers’ reactions to products and customer requests.
• Working with bookkeeper/accountant, signing off on all invoices from vendors, taking care of all charge backs/returns/breakage.
