Job Description

Artisan cheese retailer Lucy’s Whey seeks a CAFÉ MANAGER for its third and largest location opening late summer 2013 in Manhattan’s Upper East Side. This new location offers an expanded selection of artisan foods including cheeses (of course!), charcuterie, pantry items, craft beer, and a café serving specialty coffee, baked goods, cheese plates, sandwiches, small plates, wine and beer.  

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Cafe & Sales Management:

  • Maintaining a clean, fully stocked, properly merchandised and aesthetically attractive cafe  
  • Fostering and enhancing relationships with new and existing customers through superb customer service
  • Management of cash drawer, deposits, and change needs
  • Coordinating catering, gift box, wholesale, and special order fulfillment
  • Troubleshooting and solving operational and equipment issues as they arise
  • Working with the Retail Manager to ensure a synergistic and profitable relationship between the café and retail departments

Budget management:

  • Managing, analyzing, and reporting weekly sales data to the General Manager
  • Providing input to General Manager on ideas to generate productivity and increased sales
  • Working with Retail Manager to analyze and control sales data for prepared foods
  • Working with management and staff to control inventory and costs

Human Resources Management:

  • Hiring full-time and part-time staff
  • Scheduling full-time and part-time staff while maintaining labor budgets
  • Overseeing ongoing training of full-time and part-time staff
  • Communicating, distributing and enforcing the Lucy’s Whey Employee Handbook and policies
  • Supervising, educating, and leading the  staff on all daily and long term activities
  • Setting weekly sales targets and push lists

Buying & Curation:

  • Working with the General Manager and Retail Manager  to source new products
  • Placing orders for all items sold through the cafe
  • Managing store inventory in POS system – creating purchase orders, entering invoices, adding new items, adjusting pricing, and reconciling daily sales

Marketing, Branding & Public Relations:

  • Working with the General Manager and Retail Manager to create monthly messaging strategies and promotional specials
  • Assisting the General Manager with basic website updates, email blasts, blogs, and social media content
  • Coordinating special events in support of marketing messages

Requirements:

  • 1+ years supervisory experience in a restaurant or café environment
  • NYC Food Handler’s Certificate
  • Preferred proficiency in POS systems, QuickBooks, MailChimp, WordPress, and social media (Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare)
  • Full-time availability, flexible schedule
