CAFE MANAGER

Variety Coffee Roasters is a New York specialty coffee roaster founded in 2008. Variety currently has 7 cafes in Manhattan and Brooklyn, as well as a roastery and training lab in east Williamsburg, Brooklyn. At Variety, we believe that coffee should be fun. While we take our coffee seriously, we try not to take ourselves too seriously. Seriously.

The Cafe Manager will manage our newest cafe in lower Manhattan at 140 Nassau Street. We’re seeking someone who is excited to help us establish ourselves in a new community and set a standard of excellence our new customers can count on. Variety’s cafe managers are responsible for providing exemplary customer service and exemplifying best coffee and tea preparation practices. In addition to leading a team, the manager will be responsible for maintaining the cafe’s overall cleanliness, inventory and schedule. This is a full time, hourly position reporting to the Director of Retail Operations.

Responsibilities Include:

LEADERSHIP
Cultivate a healthy and fun work environment in line with Variety’s values
Lead by example in all aspects of customer service
Keep a positive attitude
Lead monthly staff meetings
Set clear performance expectations for baristas and provide them with regular feedback
Conduct biannual performance reviews with cafe staff
Use 15Five performance tool to communicate with Director of Retail Ops

CAFE OPERATIONS
Build and fill weekly cafe schedules
Cover open shifts in an emergency
Ensure inventory is accurate
Order all coffee and supplies
Oversee responsible cash handling

CAFE PRESENTATION
Work with employees to execute shift-change cleanliness expectations
Ensure that any customer-facing area is always clean and presentable
Keep cafe in constant compliance with NYC DOH standards, meeting highest expectations upon inspection

COFFEE QUALITY
Work with Retail Trainer and Coffee Department to standardize high quality of coffee drinks in the cafes
Collaborate with Coffee Department to increase coffee knowledge among staff

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
Hourly wage of $21.00 plus tips. Company-wide tip average for cafe managers is $17/hour
40 hours paid time off per year

QUALIFICATIONS
3+ years speciality coffee experience required
2+ years management experience preferred, however, we will train the right candidate
Ability to lift 50+ lbs regularly
