Part-Time Coffee Educator
Job Description
The Educator manages the coffee and espresso programs at the cafe, ensuring beverages are served within the standards of quality and hospitality. Working with the management team, the Educator assists in the training of staff members on coffee knowledge, brewing, equipment cleaning, and proper handling of equipment. The Educator serves as a leader and a role model to all staff. Duties include:
Coffee
Dial in all brewed coffee
Maintain beverage recipes and grind guides
Manage coffee inventory, ensuring coffee is brewed with proper time off roast
Ensure brewed coffee is always served fresh
Maintain tasting logs for both drip coffee and espresso
Provide staff with information about new coffees and coffee menu changes, and conduct in-store tasting with staff for all new coffees
Staff
Ensure staff knows bar drink recipes and standards
Ensure staff can verbally describe coffees to customers
Regularly taste and offer feedback on bar drinks from all staff members
Train and continually coach staff on topics including, but not limited to:
Bar flow, efficiency, and cleanliness
Palate development
Overall drink service (hospitality, presentation, latte art)
Participate in barista tests and work with new baristas on bar
Conduct new hire coffee training
Equipment
Make sure all brewing equipment is clean, including:
Regular cleaning of pots, carafes, baskets, and dispersion screens
Proper hourly and nightly cleaning of espresso machine
Regular soaking of iced coffee containers
Clean all grinders every two weeks
Maintain clean water filters and manage ordering and inventory of filters
Conduct other routine maintenance, including gasket and burr changes
Record all cleanings, maintenance, and issues in the store’s Google spreadsheet
Communicate directly with Coffee Technician for urgent issues
Qualified candidates will:
Be dedicated and committed to the craft of making delicious coffee and serving it with excellent hospitality
Be excited about building a Joe community in the cafe with both employees and customers
Have 1-2 years of food/beverage retail experience
Be a strong barista with excellent espresso/drink making skills
Be able to multitask in a fast-paced environment
Have excellent communication skills both verbal and written
Be able to deliver constructive feedback and coaching to the other Joeys in the cafe
Be able to take direction well in service of the Joe community and company mission
Have a polished and professional presentation and grooming standards
