Job Description

America’s first Japanese Cat Café is seeking a General Manager to launch this unique café. Located on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, Koneko has an artisanal Japanese-influenced menu – and a big, furry family of adoptable cats.

We are seeking a dedicated, friendly and experienced Manager who is excited to get in on the ground floor of our one-of-a-kind café. The right candidate will be excited to help define and launch a new, complex, and memorable experience that features artisanal food and beverage service, a chic architect-designed space, an assortment of retail products, and an indoor/outdoor “Cattery” – where guests can play with and adopt cats that have been rescued from NYC animal shelters.

The ideal candidate will have extraordinary customer service skills, the ability to manage the simultaneous operations of both café and Cattery, great leadership skills, be calm under pressure, and demonstrated success as a Manager in the demanding NYC café/restaurant scene. Passion for cats and Cat People is a huge plus.

Koneko will specialize in Japanese bar snacks and bakery items, as well as artisanal coffee, tea, sake, beer, and wine. The café will be open from 7 am to 11 pm.

Responsibilities include:

  • Supervise and manage performance of Café and Cattery staff & work schedule to fill all shifts
  • Comply with all relevant New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene regulations to avoid violations and fines. Inform employees of all policies and ensure they are upheld.
  • Maintain adequate inventory of all Café and Cattery products based on demand and adjust orders to reduce waste. Manage staff to ensure that product is fresh and flawless.
  • Maintain inventory of retail products for sale in the café and Cattery
  • Perform employee evaluations, document employee performance, assist in staff development and growth.
  • Assist staff behind the bar to reduce customer wait time during periods of high traffic.
  • Assist in communications with and coordination of vendors and partners, including Koneko’s animal rescue agency partners.
  • Assist in coordinating and executing special events and fundraisers

Requirements:

  • A minimum of 2 years experience as a Manager.
  • Must have experience within a restaurant or cafe with a similar capacity and clientele.
  • Ability to multitask in a complex, multi-dimensional environment while maintaining service standards and a sense of humor.
  • Impeccable attention to detail, ability to be attentive to guests while also playing a supportive role to front of house staff.
  • Ability to lead a team, establish service standards and positively influence employee behavior.
  • Strong financial and computer skills, including POS, inventory, and reservations booking.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule.
