Full-Time Junior/Production Roaster
Job Description
100-year-old New York City roaster Dallis Bros. Coffee is seeking a junior roaster and production person, to begin immediately.
Job responsibilities will be split between roasting and production functions. 40% Roasting – on a G45 Probat and UG15 Probat (Dallis Bros. Coffee line) and the AR-23 Jabez Burns (Gramercy Park Coffee line) 60% Production – Hand Packaging and some automated packaging (form and fill machines).
You will:
- Set up production cuppings and cup with the coffee director
- Use quality control tools where necessary: moisture meter, density test, agtron and oxygen meter.
- Follow all procedures of logging batches in our data logger, weigh out green coffee, keep an organized work station (there is no desk).
- Work as part of the team on the production floor with the Production Manager and the rest of the team.
- Be willing and able to go with the flow while maintaining a solution seeking attitude.
- Treat every batch with incredible attention to detail to coax out the best expression of that coffee and hit the flavor profile target – as required by the Coffee Director
- Follow all internal and external rules and regulations to the certifications: Organic, Fair Trade and Rainforest Alliance.
Qualifications:
- An authentic passion for all types of coffee, both Specialty and Conventional qualities alike.
- Organized and detail oriented.
- Excellent arithmetic and computer skills (gmail, excel, and RMA data logger).
- Flexible and adaptable to a work environment, which will require many different tasks in one day.
- Able to follow instructions and finish a job from A to Z without constant supervision.
- Must be a team player and be willing to work to understand the system and seek durable solutions to problems that may come up.
- Have 2 years experience in the coffee industry.
- Follow our core value at Dallis by tasting together and by learning to cup and receive direct feedback on roasting performance.
- The ideal candidate must have some cupping and roasting experience.
Environment:
- Roasting conditions are rather loud, hot and dusty.
- The roaster is required to spend most of the day on their feet.
- The roaster will frequently need to lift 75lbs from the floor.
- Note that the production area can be very loud.
- Production spends much of the day labeling bags, filling bags, sealing bags, grinding coffee, checking weights, double checking sales orders, flavoring coffee, posting production in our accounting system, and organizing the area. This will require extended hours on their feet and constant movement.
- In production it is expected to be able to lift 50lb boxes from the floor.
