Lead Roaster
Reports to: VP of Coffee
Status: Full Time, Salaried

Job Purpose: The Lead Roaster plays a pivotal role in Saxbys coffee program. The Lead Roaster will oversee a production team, have significant influence over key coffee decisions, manage the Quality Control program and ensure that roasting facilities and equipment run smoothly.

Summary of duties and responsibilities:
– Overseeing production team with daily roasts ranging in size from small to large batches and corresponding production machinery (Loring 15K, 70K)
– The Lead Roaster will have the potential for some roasting responsibilities in addition to supervising production roasters
– Sample roasting and sample inventory management
– Experience with coffee profile development with the ability to make adjustments as needed
– A deep understanding of Saxbys roasting profiles, techniques and blend compositions
– Ensure that orders are fulfilled in a timely and efficient manner
– Oversee production team, including: Roasting, Filling and shipping operations, Quality Control, Monitor and project green coffee inventory
– Maintain a consistently high level of communication with the VP of Coffee regarding production issues and inventory
– Participate and/or lead quality control sessions with VP of Coffee and production team
– Ensure for a safe, proper and extremely clean work environment, while complying with necessary food and safety guidelines at all times
– Clean and maintain equipment and maintain standards for preventative maintenance
– Aptitude for continuing education on coffee
– Assist VP of Coffee in recruitment and hiring efforts for roasting facility

– Minimum of 2-3 years of production roasting experience
– Prior experience with roasting tools such as cropster
– A desire to learn and ability to apply and share knowledge
– Must be a team player
– Must have an entrepreneurial, self-starter approach to problem-solving while demonstrating an ability to take direction from leadership
– Must be able to work independently
– A passion for coffee and an understanding of our role in the coffee chain
– Ability to communicate clearly and effectively
– Ability to perform the physical demands of roasting and lifting green and roasted coffee, including the ability to stand/walk for extended periods of time each day
– Recognize the value in repetition and the consistency of daily activities
– An extreme level of attention to detail and focus
