Lead Roaster

 

Virgin Islands Coffee Roasters is looking for a Lead Roaster. This position will involve roasting, green coffee management and production. This is a quickly growing company looking for hardworking, experienced team players to grow with us.  Although primarily roasting, this position will also assist with other aspects of the business on an as-needed basis when time allows.  Primary responsibilities will include, but are not limited to the following:

 

  • Roasting on a 1950 Probat UG22, 5 Kilo US Roaster and sample roaster according to strict standards of consistency and quality, keeping accurate and legible roasting logs
  • Management of green coffee, including inventory, coordinating ordering and delivery, unloading shipments and organizing and maintaining cleanliness
  • Overseeing the routine cleaning and maintenance of a vintage 22kg roaster and afterburner
  • Serving as a general go-between among roasting, ordering and other departments
  • Organizing and participating in weekly cupping and analysis
  • Engaging in all green, roasted coffee education and new roasting curriculum offered
  • Engaging with all guests of the space and leading by example
  • Assist in production and perform other duties as assigned
  • Must be able to lift up to 50lbs of green coffee and dump shoulder level into roaster

Experience sought:

  • Demonstrated passion and enthusiasm for coffee.
  • At least 1 year of roasting experience, on a drum roaster.
  • Barista experience
  • Strong mathematical and time management skills
  • Self-motivated and self-starting, with an ability to multi-task and work under minimal
  • supervision
  • Extreme concentration and focus with hands-on tasks
  • Ability to listen, learn and follow through
  • Ability to acknowledge and grow without ego
  • Flexibility to manage and prioritize daily and weekly tasks
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Basic technical aptitude and willingness to learn equipment details
  • Basic familiarity with MS Office/Excel, Google Docs and other basic computer tools to enable         coffee and team organization.
  • Ability to manage immediate stock and supply chain.
