Full-Time Manager of Communication and Digital Journalism
Job Description
Roasters trust us to bring them the best coffees we can find from the best people we can find producing for specialty. Within this work there are more stories than there is time to tell them, and we are looking for a Manager of Communication and Digital Journalism who can alchemize our work into stories, events and programs that capture the people and processes that make our offers unique. The primary responsibility of this position will be to better inform and engage our existing community of customers, continuing our strategy of growing from within.
Specifically, this involves (1) interviewing experts within Crop to Cup’s sales, sourcing and QC teams, (2) organizing this content to publish through email lists, websites and social media, (3) tracking and improving the effectiveness of communications through analytics, and (4) taking ultimate responsibility for the quality of customers’ interactions with the company through these platforms.
This will be done by executing against an annual content calendar that contains all updates, events and other proactive and planned communications. The primary audience is the community of roasters who enable the work we do, be that through croptocup.com or showroomcoffee.com. Goals for this position will look at impact on customer loyalty, engagement and access to information.
The role of communications planning and execution also involves overall responsibility for our websites (working with a team of developers), industry expos and other promotional events.
Job Requirements:
This position requires a persuasive writer with a natural voice – a coffee journalist who loves surfacing stories and advocating with compelling digital content. The position will require a deep participation in specialty coffee, and the role requires the candidate to bring their passion and lived experience in the industry into their storytelling.
While the job can be staffed from anywhere, location at or near our Brooklyn or Chicago office is preferred. Expect some travel related to meeting other members of the team, for events, and to pursue industry or media initiatives as needed. Working with a small team involves an organized, self-motivated personality. This position will also be responsible for representing and maintaining the values of the organization.
Specific requirements include:
-5+ years in the coffee industry with some combination of experience in marketing, journalism, advocacy, content creation roles. Digital marketing experience preferred.
-Candidates will need to demonstrate effective visual and written journalism/storytelling in specialty coffee and a deep understanding of the specialty coffee community (home, nano, and micro roasters specifically). Examples may include writing for a personal outlet or a prior employer, social media, video or other forms.
-The candidate should also possess an understanding of the green buying landscape and coffee sourcing. Coffee roasting experience is a plus.
-Candidates will need to effectively Interact internally + externally to collect, create and craft compelling stories/digital content that demonstrates sourcing progress and invites roaster participation. (Ex.write and edit harvest updates, community profiles, new arrival announcements, annual retrospective, long term project work).
-Comfort with reporting on key indicators of content performance – email marketing (Klaviyo), messaging (social) and testing to support marketing strategy development.
-Ability to direct an editorial/communications and engagement calendar (manage and coordinate wordpress products, website journal, email comms, social media and coffee trade relationships).
-Experience directing the creation / design of digital storytelling assets and multimedia (photos, videos, etc.)
Ability to work within parameters of a brand guide and apply to all generated content

-Strong analytical mind, design acumen, and attention to detail required
