About the Job
The Production Roaster position is focused on the coffee roasting craft. The position sits at the very heart of our production department, controlling the single most important step in the process. A production roaster is expected to be able to carry out the roast approach agreed to with the Roastery Leader/Lead Roaster while maintaining awareness of the overall production flow.
You will:
Prepare batches at the beginning of the day being mindful of coffee quality and workflow efficiency.
Consistently roast coffee at a level that meets or exceeds Blue Bottle’s high standards.
Maintain the roasting equipment through occasional adjustments and scheduled cleanings.
Keep a batch log of coffees roasted during the shift, which includes updating Cropster as well as keeping the paper logs provided.
Participate regularly in cuppings and discussions regarding coffee quality.
Remain open and welcoming of questions about roasting from BBC staff, both from outside and inside the roastery.
Work with a sense of urgency.
Is reliable, honest, and cares about his or her work.
Act as a representative of Blue Bottle at all times.
Keep all work areas clean and tidy.
Set an example for the rest of the staff, occasionally assisting in supervision.
Fulfill any other duties on the production floor deemed necessary by the Roastery Leader.

Familiar with operating a Roaster – preferably a drum roaster
Proficient in basic mathematical principles needed to drive good business decisions.
Good with hands- basic mechanical skills are a must.
Able to move bags of green coffee sufficient to complete the task at hand, at approximately 154 lbs/ bag
Able to use online tools including Microsoft Word and Excel, Google Suite as well as other online organizational tools
Able to operate a forklift (recommended)
You have:
2+ years of professional coffee roasting experience
A thorough understanding of how to safely, responsibly use, and clean equipment
A deep love for exceptional customer experiences, and great coffee
The ability to understand and able to communicate in English proficiently
A comprehensive understanding of the concepts of coffee roasting

The ability to stand, walk, sit for long periods of time (at least 8 hours per day and 5 days per week)

The ability to have close visual acuity to perform repetitive visual checking, counting, spotting small defects, determine the accuracy of numbers and package
