JOB OVERVIEW:

Espresso and Specialty Coffee Educator and Retail Sales Associate:

KL5 is looking for a part-time person to join our retail and education teams. As a dual role you will serve as a Sales Associate and a Coffee Educator, balancing and fulfilling a combination of customer-facing sales and support with education through facilitating small group espresso/coffee classes.This position requires hardworking, customer-first mindset, detail-oriented folks with a strong ability to teach and inspire others sharing their love for coffee and all the rituals that come with preparing it.

You will collaborate with the Retail Manager, Owner, and the rest of our KL5 team to implement and maintain systems of efficiency and growth for both the retail and educational spaces as well as ensure effective communication for customers across both spaces.

Being well-versed in and continually learning about the products we carry in our retail shop will be essential, as you will need to confidently recommend products and address any customer questions.

We are a small business with a large heart specializing in home coffee equipment and accessories located in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Managing your time effectively to balance the retail and educational responsibilities will be key to success in this role. Job Descriptions & Responsibilities

Part-time Sales Associate

  • Coffee Knowledge
    • A deep interest in coffee or tea and a desire to learn
    • Excitement for sharing knowledge on the different ways coffee can be prepared and the tools that can be used to create their perfect cup
    • Continued knowledge building by studying products to easily explain to customers
  • Retail Space Experience:
    • Provide excellent customer service
    • Helping customers in store as well as on the phone (Answer with a smile!)
    • Professional but fun demeanor
    • Passion for teaching customers about the espresso machines and accessories we carry
    • Ability to read product info and “translate” to customers
    • Handling customer inquiries, complaints, and ensuring high levels of customer satisfaction
  • Retail Systems:
    • Strong attention to detail and a solid work ethic
    • Ring up items accurately in Square
    • Create and Send Invoices
    • Accepting various payment types (zelle, venmo, cash, CC)
    • Creating a deposit for larger items in both Square + Monday
    • Implementing Returns/Restocking Fee
    • Understanding Warranty within various products
  • Retail Inventory:
    • Keep backstock neat an organized
    • Receive inventory accurately and accept via PO
    • If we do not carry a specific item a customer asks about, add it to the Monday board under
  • Daily/Weekly Retail Space Maintenance
    • Wash Windows + Sweep Floors
    • Dust and Pledge Wooden or Windex Glass surfaces
    • Keep products on the floor looking good!

Espresso and Coffee Class Educator

  • Coffee Knowledge
    • Deep knowledge of coffee making and processes including various topics such as:brewing methods, coffee origins, tasting techniques, and latte art.
  • Class Planning and Development
    • Work from existing class materials and structure with possibility of developing additional classes
    • Update and improve upon class materials, including presentation slides, handouts, and post-class resources to reinforce learning
    • Work with the Retail Manager to organize and plan class schedules
  • Class Delivery and Instruction:
    • Lead and instruct in-person classes – providing both technical knowledge and hands-on demonstrations for in-shop and office classes
    • Foster a positive and engaging environment, encouraging customer participation and interaction
    • Adjust teaching methods based on the class size and customer experience levels
    • Ability to break down knowledge articulate and demonstrate how to dial in, make espresso and Steam milk
  • Class Logistics:
    • Set up and prepare all necessary equipment, ingredients, and supplies before each class
    • Oversee class activities, ensuring smooth execution of each lesson
    • Clean and reset the workspace post-class, ensuring that equipment and materials are properly stored for future use
  • Customer Support and Engagement:
    • Answer questions and provide personalized guidance during and after classes.
    • Provide resources, including coffee recommendations and tips, to help customers continue their coffee education beyond the class.
    • Offer follow-up support, such as answering emails or providing additional resources, as needed.
    • Stay informed about the products available in the retail shop to confidently recommend items and address any customer questions before, during, or after classes
  • Stay Current with Coffee Trends:
    • Stay up-to-date on the latest coffee industry trends, brewing techniques, and equipment developments
    • Research and test new coffee-related topics to incorporate into classes.
    • Attend industry events, read relevant publications, and engage in continuous learning
  • Administrative Tasks:
    • Maintain accurate records of class attendance and feedback.
    • Send class materials (e.g., handouts, slides, resources) to attendees after each class
    • Respond to attendee inquiries and provide additional guidance or clarification as needed via email or other communication channels
    • Work with management to assess class effectiveness and make improvements as needed

Position Requirements

  • Weekends a MUST: This position will start with a Friday, Saturday, and Sunday schedule. Classes currently run on the weekends.
  • Retail Experience: Or at least experience with customer interactions and register work
  • Barista + Coffee Knowledge: Familiarity with dialing in espresso shots. A strong understanding of coffee brewing methods, espresso preparation, coffee origins, and tasting techniques. Ability to clearly explain and demonstrate these concepts in a retail and classroom setting. Hands-on experience with coffee equipment (e.g., espresso machines, grinders, brewers, pour-over setups, etc.).
  • Customer-Facing Skills: Exceptional interpersonal skills to engage with customers in a friendly, approachable, and professional manner. The ability to manage customer expectations in a busy retail space as well as provide clear instructions during classes
  • Computer Skills: Familiarity with Square, Google Drive (Docs, Sheets, etc.), email, and Monday platform. Ability to send out materials and manage digital class resources effectively as well as learn new systems quickly.
  • Organizational Skills: Organized and innate curiosity with a mind for figuring out and maintaining efficient retail systems (digital and physical). Ability to effectively plan and execute class schedules, prepare materials, and manage logistics. Capable of keeping track of class attendance and follow-ups in an organized manner.
  • Physical Ability: Comfortable with setting up, troubleshooting, and maintaining equipment during classes. Able to and perform tasks such as lifting and moving coffee gear (up to 50lbs) either through innate strength or knowing how to utilize leverage, and performing physical tasks like stooping, kneeling, listening, balancing, repetitive motions, and bending. As well as standing for up to 7 hours and being active in the classroom environment.
  • Self-Direction & Problem-Solving: Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and think creatively to solve problems. Plan and execute classes, and solve problems quickly if any issues arise during classes or with equipment.
    Time Management & Independent Work: Demonstrates strong time management skills to efficiently prioritize tasks and responsibilities. Able to work independently, effectively managing both retail and educational duties while maintaining high standards of quality and productivity.

Position: Part-Time / Hourly /1099 – Exempt Position
Hours: 20-24 hours a week
Pay: $22 – 23/hour- Paid every two weeks
Schedule: Friday, Saturday, and Sunday
