Variety Coffee Roasters is a New York specialty coffee roaster founded in 2008. Variety currently has cafés in Williamsburg, Greenpoint, Bushwick, Chelsea, Park Slope and the Upper East Side, as well as a roastery and training lab in East Williamsburg. The Retail Trainer is responsible for training all new Variety cafe hires, as well as executing refresher training for current staff. They will primarily work with trainees in our cafes, on an active bar (60% of time). Some training will also be held in the training lab at the Roastery (30% of time) with roughly 10% of their time spent on administrative work. The Retail Trainer will work closely with Variety baristas to educate them on all duties including but not limited to: espresso and milk preparation, latte art, coffee brewing, cupping, general coffee knowledge and bar cleanliness. This is a full time, salaried position reporting to the Director of Retail Operations.

THE RETAIL TRAINER WILL:
Cultivate a training program that is engaging, accessible, and foundational to Variety’s excellence in coffee quality
Raise the overall level of barista proficiency specifically related to milk handling and latte art
Establish parity across all Variety cafes of consistently high quality drip and espresso
Innovate new methods and materials for maintaining staff investment in Variety’s coffee program

RESPONSIBILITIES:
TRAINING
Conduct on-the-job training sessions in Variety cafes
Conduct lab training sessions for exceptional drink making abilities while also being able to clearly convey this knowledge to others
Regularly check in at cafes to ensure all coffee standards are met
Assist with quality control/recipe assessment and development as needed
Lead Staff Cuppings in stores and at training lab

ADMINISTRATIVE
Maintain training program that is consolidated and trackable
Monitor baristas’ progression in training program
Work with store managers to schedule trainings with all new hires and current baristas as needed
Develop supplemental trainings and materials to expand the baristas knowledge and engagement

GENERAL
Exemplify Variety’s standards of warmth, consistency, speed, efficiency, and cleanliness.
Occasionally cover shifts at cafes when not in conflict with other duties
Keep the training lab clean and stocked with items necessary for training (milk, aged out coffee, cups, towels, etc.)
Attend occasional work-related events as needed

QUALIFICATIONS
3+ years of speciality coffee experience required
2+ years management experience preferred
Curriculum design experience preferred
NYC Food Handler’s license required
Demonstrated organizational skills
Experience with G-Suite
Coffee equipment understanding, including programming and basic troubleshooting
Ability to work both independently and with a team

COMPENSATION + BENEFITS
Starting salary of $63,000/year
80 hours paid time off per year
40 hour paid bonding family leave
