Part-Time Server and barista

Companion Cafe – Posted by gtk212 Park Slope/Prospect Heights border

Job Description

We are a tiny owner-operated neighborhood cafe serving breakfast and lunch. We roast our own coffee and cook all our food from scratch. At night we operate the space as a craft tiki bar, and we share our one workspace, so organization and cleanliness is paramount to our functionality. Looking for someone who above all else enjoys engaging with their fellow humans. If you’re like me, and talking to people all day completely exhausts you, please do not apply.

We work as hard as we do to create a truly unique experience for our customers, and you will play a big role in that as the Front of House maitre d’, host with the most witch/wizard. You gotta feel good working with your hands, and maintain your chill when we get busy and things inevitably get a bit chaotic.

Espresso experience is a bonus, but not necessary if you are open and willing to be taught how to pull a shot and steam milk. You are going to be serving people breakfast and lunch, making coffee and shakes and washing dishes by hand.

This is not a corporate cafe. We are a SMALL business, so working here is a bit like joining a family. We work as a team, we have each other’s backs, we rely on each other, and so trust is absolutely crucial. The “kitchen,” fridge and espresso machine are all right next to each other, and space in general is super limited, so you have to feel ok in tight quarters.

Hourly rate is $15+tips, and I can offer about 20 hours to start, with potentially more soon. We’ll work together to create a schedule that works with your life. At least to start it will be under the table, so no taxes for you! You will be fed when you are working and you will be treated first and foremost like a human being. There’s nothing worse than serving people a meal when you are hungry. I did it for years and I will not tolerate any of that bullshit at my cafe.

Also, unfortunately, those of you who are shorter in stature are going to struggle to work here because we have built almost all of our storage as vertical shelves. If you are shorter than 5’6″ or so it is going to be extremely difficult, I am so sorry to say. My partner, who is a mere 5′, had a hard time being able to reach just about everything she needed to reach when she worked here.

How to Apply

You can send a resume if you want to, but a much better strategy if you want to work here is to just come by the cafe Wednesday-Friday between the hours of 8am-4pm, and introduce yourself to us. Bring a resume, and decide for yourself if you think it would be a good fit. This is a very unique cafe, unlike any you've probably worked in before. One important disclaimer, since I am posting this on this platform - I have worked in coffee since I was a teenager, I learned how to roast from an award winning fancy pants Australian in Paris, I have worked for the coffee aristocrats, as well as the salt of the Earth companies that do still exist. I have seen it all. If you have any delusions of pretension or exclusivity floating around in your head regarding coffee please do not apply and please stay away from me.
