Part-Time Server and barista

Companion Cafe – Posted by gtk212 64 6th Avenue BK 11217

Job Description

Tiny, owner-operated breakfast and lunch spot seeking a forward facing server and barista. Ideal candidate would be comfortable providing customers with friendly and competent table service, while making espresso drinks and shakes, and washing dishes by hand (no dishwasher). Our space is tiny and quirky but we are beloved by our community and do the best we can with what we have. The food menu drives the business, but we also roast our own coffee. The cafe is full of plants and bright colors, and the majority of our customers are regulars who live within a few blocks.

This is not a typical cafe or restaurant job. We are running a fairly high volume daytime food and coffee spot out of a space that is essentially a bar. You will be working alongside the owner and cook all day, and we work as a team. If you work here you will have to hustle, but you can also make good money for this kind of work.

Compensation is either $15 or $20/hour depending on the day’s sales, and you split tips with me, the cook. When it’s busy we move and when it’s chill we chill. We are trying to fill 2 shifts – Thursdays and Sundays. You would work 8-4 each day and could expect to make between $400-$450 for those two days, and you will be well fed while working. We are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Finally, two disclaimers before you apply –
1. Due to the tiny tiny nature of our cafe (247 square feet), we have to use all of the space we have. This means we have built vertically, and therefore working here is EXTREMELY difficult if you are on the shorter side. My partner used to work with us as a server and barista, but she stands at exactly 5′ tall, and it made everything much more difficult for her. It is not necessarily a deal breaker, but unfortunately the shorter you are, the harder this job would be. Regardless of your height, you must be comfortable standing on top of a stool to reach higher shelves.

2. You would become the third member of our team. We are only myself, the cook, who works everyday, and another server/barista who works Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. We are both men, and so, as believers in the necessity of balance, are strongly inclined to hire someone with feminine energy for this position. Sorry dudes! We truly mean no offense, it’s just about keeping the vibes. Sue us if you wish, we have almost nothing to take.

How to Apply

Feel free to email me a resume, but if you really want to work here, the best strategy is to just come by and introduce yourself so we can talk about it. Best time of day is to show up between 3:30-4PM on a Wednesday, Thursday or Friday afternoon. That would be the best time to have a quick conversation and try to figure out if it would be a good fit.
