Driftaway Coffee is a sustainability-focused coffee roaster, dedicated to offering specialty coffee in an environmentally and socially responsible manner. At Driftaway, our shop is a hub for our customers to experience our brand and values firsthand. The Tasting Room Barista plays a critical role in delivering an exceptional customer experience both in terms of service and product (coffee) and to ensure that every cup of coffee reflects our dedication to quality and sustainability.

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Tasting Room Barista is responsible for preparing and serving a variety of high-quality slow bar pour over coffees and espresso-based beverages, ensuring each drink is crafted to meet established recipes and brewing methods. They will not only be responsible for drink preparation, but also lead scheduled guided tastings, where they will engage with customers in a deeper way about coffee. They maintain a clean and organized workspace, including regular equipment cleaning and maintenance, while also managing stock and monitoring inventory for restocking when necessary.

YOUR FOCUS

– Barista and Coffee Brewing Duties
– Take an active role in brewing and preparing coffee, including single pour overs, flights, and espresso beverages, ensuring every cup meets Driftaway’s high standards for taste and quality.
– Participate in QC and dialing in of all coffees.
– Collaborate with other baristas in advanced coffee brewing techniques, including pour-over methods, espresso preparation, and proper milk steaming (including latte art).
– Regularly calibrate coffee equipment, such as espresso machines and grinders, to ensure consistency in coffee quality.
– Stay informed on the latest coffee trends and techniques, and incorporate them into the shop’s offerings when appropriate.

– Coffee education
1. Educate Customers: Provide engaging and informative guidance on coffees, varietals, producers, origins, and flavor profiles to enhance the customer experience.
2. Community Engagement: Assist in hosting workshops, tastings, and events that focus on deepening customers’ understanding and appreciation of specialty coffee.

– Ensure Exceptional Customer Experience
– Participate in building an exceptional customer experience, from the quality of the coffee to the ambiance and upkeep of the shop.
– Handle customer inquiries and resolve issues promptly and professionally.
– Develop and implement strategies to enhance customer satisfaction and loyalty.

– Oversee Daily Operations
– Restock shop with all necessary supplies, including coffee beans, milk, and other inventory items.
– Maintain inventory counts and escalate to Shop Manager when needed for excesses, shortages and issues.

– Uphold Sustainability Standards
– Implement and maintain sustainable practices within the shop, including waste reduction, recycling, and sourcing eco-friendly products.
– Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, promoting a clean and safe environment for both customers and staff.
– Promote Driftaway’s commitment to sustainability and social responsibility.

ROLE TYPE

– Hourly, part-time position, Saturdays and Sundays, with occasional weekday shifts as needed.
– Cafe hours will be 8am to 4pm Saturday and Sunday (subject to change).
– Pay range $22 to $24 per hour, depending on experience. We’re a no tipping establishment.
– We’re a small and tight-knit team, however, the role directly reports to Tasting Room Manager.
